French e-commerce and online language rankings…

French is growing rapidly in both e-commerce and online language use. Currently French is the 8th most spoken online language sustaining about 22 million users i.e. 3.5% of all internet use.

German is leading Europe in both language use and e-commerce spending and will continue to do so. French, though much smaller (about half of German) is keeping pace and is growing just as fast, if not faster.

In 2004 it is expected that the French e-commerce position will hold 7th place in the online world economy, behind the U.S., Japan, Germany, China, U.K., and Australia (Australia and France are practically identical). Considering these rankings, French is the third biggest e-commerce language representation in Europe (behind German and English). Like German, French e-commerce will double in these next couple of years. It is expected that each French internet user will spend as an average $4,212 a year (this includes B2B). The Chinese internet users are expected to average $1,477. French, except for specific circumstances, then, is a better, lower risk investment than Chinese for your global web site.
